Defending European champions Portugal, after two consecutive draws, registered the first win of their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.
The recently crowned Nations league champions defeated Serbia 4-2 in a Group B match at the Red Star Stadium in Belgrade.
Goncalo Guedes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Siva all scored in the second half after William Carvalho broke the deadlock in the first half.
Carvalho’s goal came three minutes before the break, following a set-piece. The Serbian defence scrambled inside the box, and the Real Betis mid-fielder scored with a tap-in from close range.
Portugal had a couple of chance to score earlier in the game but their record goalscorer Ronaldo failed to sort his feet out.
Goncalo Guedes made it 2-0 moments before the hour mark. The Valencia winger fooled a couple of Serbian defenders before hammering one with his weak foot.
Serbia halved the deficit to make it 1-1, ten minutes later. Nikola Milenkovic rose highest to head home from a corner kick.
With 10 minutes left of regulation time, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 89th goal for Portugal to make it 3-1. The Portuguese skipper lashed on to a Bernardo Silva through-ball and dinked one over goalkeeper Marco Dimitrovic, who had already committed.
Alexandre Mitrovic scored five minutes later to give Serbia a glimmer of hope. However, Bernardo Silva scored a minute later to secure 3 important points for Portugal.
Portugal had drawn a couple of home games against Ukraine and Serbia, respectively. However, they are unbeaten in their last 9 games.
Fernando Santos’ men are now 8 points behind Ukraine, who are sitting on top of Group B with 13 points from 5 games. Although, Portugal has a couple of games in hands.
