CSK, Chennai Super Kings, IPL, Whistle Podu, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni

Yet another IPL chapter is smashing its way through the frenzy cricket fans.

The 12th edition of IPL began with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Interestingly, CSK released a new version of its anthem, ‘Whitstle Podu’ just before the 2019 season kicked off. The latest version featurs Suresh Raina, CSK deputy captain. He is seen singing the song and whistling in the video.

Sharing the video on Twitter, CSK captioned the video “The whistlemax #ChinnaThala you just can’t get enough of! #WhistlePodu.”

Original ‘Whistle Podu’ has been out for nearly 10 years. Surprisingly, at the conclusion of IPL 2018, the CSK theme song re-emerged as the most watched IPL video of the year.

The ‘Whistle Podu’ video has many versions now online. Nevertheless, it rooted in local culture and captures the spirit of Tamil Nadu. The IPL fans took the anthem a step further and made it a trend across the country as well as world.

Initially, CSK put the 2009 original video up on the website and YouTube. It had registered some 50,000 views organically. During the third season, Dhoni became a part of the Whistle Podu video. However, by then the CSK anthem was already trending. There were more than 200 fan-made videos on YouTube on the Whistle Podu theme.

The spirit of the song was reflected during the 2 years when CSK was not playing because of the match-fixing ban. #WhistlePodu trended on social media for the finals of both the 2016 and 2017 seasons of IPL.

The year 2018 was a comeback for the Super Kings as well as the Whistle Podu anthem.

Another interesting event during the comeback was the Whistle Podu Express. The Cauvery issue was brewing in 2018 and protests were in full swing. The protesters wanted all CSK matches to be held out of Chennai in support of the farmers. As a result, apart from one game in Chennai, the rest were shifted to Pune.

Heartbroken fans approached the CSK management team requesting if they could arrange match tickets. Interestingly, the management put forth an all-expense paid trip for their loyal supporters on the famous – Whistle Podu Express.

Literally, the CSK fans “Whistle Podu” their way to watch their team play.
