IPL 2019 has kicked off with Virat Kohli playing the first ball of the two-month carnival.
On Sunday, Mumbai Indians will be up against the new-look Delhi Capitals at the Wankhade Stadium.
Sri Lanka’s skipper in the T-20 format, Lasith Malinga will be missing the first six games of Mumbai Indians while Adam Milne has been completely ruled out for the whole season.
Malinga will be missing almost half the season as the Sri Lankan Cricket selectors have made it mandatory for every player to play in the Super Provincial One-Day tournament if they want to stand a chance of selection for the upcoming World Cup.
Malinga played for the Mumbai Indians till season 10 of the Indian Premier League and then moved into the backroom staff in season 11 of the IPL.
Mumbai Indians were often found out on the field last season as they were missing an experienced bowler in the squad. The responsibility of leading the bowling attack fell on the young Jasprit Bumrah and it reflected in the poor results.
Going into the Season 12 auctions, Mumbai had earmarked Malinga as the ideal buy and they got him back into the side for 2 crore rupees. Losing him for more than a third of the season will hurt Mumbai’s chances of reaching the playoffs stage.
According to reports from ESPN, Milne will be missing whole of the IPL season due to a swollen heel.
For the match against Delhi Capitals, Mumbai are left with just foreigner seam options in Mitchell McClenaghan and Ben Cutting while the Indian pace battery of Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Barinder Sran is unaffected by injury.
Mumbai would be looking to bring in a replacement for Milne for this season and several sources suggest that they are looking to sign the Caribbean speedster Alzzari Joseph.
