Karim Benzema netted his 10th in all competition as Real Madrid CF on Saturday overcame a tough challenge possessed by high-flyers Real Sociedad in La Liga.
Real Madrid won 3-1 against Sociedad as Gareth Bale came on as a substitute to a screech of whistles at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Bale, only recently fit following a calf injury had a vexed outing with Wales, celebrating victory with a flag that read: “Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order.”
The Welshmen received a hostile ovation from the Bernabeu faithful, who had already jeered his name before the start, citing their dissatisfaction.
“I hope [the whistling] doesn’t carry on for the rest of the season,” manager Zinedine Zidane said after the game.
Bale came on as a second-half sub, replacing Rodrygo in the 67th minute after Real Madrid had overturned a one-goal deficit.
Sergio Ramos howler allowed Willian Jose to give Real Sociedad the lead after just 110 seconds.
The former Real Madrid academy graduate lashed on to a poor back pass from the Ramos, before rounding off Courtois to find the back of the net.
Real Madrid, however, equalised through Benzema, eight minutes before. Luka Modric ferocious free-kick found the unmarked Frenchmen, who chested the ball to level it up before the half-time whistle.
Sociedad, after taking the lead found themselves 1-2 after the restart as Fede Valverde’s deflected shot wrong-footed everyone including the Alex Remiro in the Txuri-urdin goal.
Luka Modric, who assisted Valverde for Madrid’s second, also found the net as Real Madrid doubled their lead to put the game in bed.
Zinedine Zidane’s men sit second in the table, level on points with leaders Barcelona, who have a superior goal difference.
Real Madrid will now face Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.
