All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Thursday announced an unprecedented eight-member squad for India’s Davis Cup tie against Pakistan.
Davis Cup squad: Non-Playing Captain, Sumit Nagal, Ramkumar Ramanathan, Saketh Myneni, Rohan Bopanna, Leander Paes.
AITA has also named three reserves including Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, Saikumar Mukund, and Siddharth Rawat.
India and Pakistan will lock horns from November 29-30 at a yet-to-be-finalised neutral venue after Indian teams refused to travel to Islamabad due to security concerns.
Mahesh Bhupathi, who was recently sacked as non-playing captain, had also refused to travel to Islamabad.
As a result, a new Davis Cup captain was appointed for this tie by the executive committee of AITA.
On November 7, Bhupathi slammed AITA for changing the captain without any communication with him
According to him, the All India Tennis Association did not communicate the removal of him as skipper of the Indian Davis Cup team directly and has instead fallen back to the excuse of ‘him being unavailable’.
The ITF took a decision to move the tie to a neutral venue which is still to be announced.
“The final team will be communicated to the ITF after receiving their communication on November 18. As the venue and surface are still unknown, the selection committee decided to have three reserve players for only this particular tie,” read an official statement.
India and Pakistan will face off in the Asia/Oceania Group 1 Tie on November 29 and 30.
