Ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifier against Cyprus, Belgium skipper Eden Hazard said that they are among the favourites to win next year’s European Championships.
Belgium will host Cyprus at the King Boudoin Stadium, having already qualified for next year’s marquee event as table-toppers.
“We are among the favourites, for sure. But we are not alone. France, Italy, Spain, England are also serious opponents,” he added.
The ‘Red Devils’ have won all of their 9 qualifying matches, so far, scoring 36 goals and conceding just twice.
The Real Madrid forward added that they have developed a ‘winning mentality’ which they had lacked at the Euro 2016 and last year’s FIFA World Cup.
“We know each other better, we have young players … I think we are stronger. We have developed the winning mentality that we didn’t have enough at Euro 2016 and the World Cup,” Eden Hazard told the press.
Belgium finished third in last year’s World Cup, which France won, while in Euro 2016, they had crashed out in the quarter-finals, following a 3-1 defeat to Wales.
The 27-year-old, Eden, scored twice and assisted his brother Thorgan as Belgium won 4-1 in Saint Petersburg against Russia, who’ve also qualified alongside Roberto Martinez’s team.
Belgium will now face Cyprus in Group I on Tuesday, hoping to end the qualification campaign, unbeaten.
UEFA EURO 2020 has been slated between June 12 to July 12, next year.
The Tournament will be held in 12 cities in 12 European countries.
