Eoin Morgan-inspired England thrashed Afghanistan by 150 runs in their last match at Old Trafford.

Sri Lanka on the other hand, lost out last time against Australia.

England won the toss and chose to field first.

Sri Lanka lost 2 wickets with just 3 runs on the board. However, decent contributions from Avishkha Fernando and Kusal Mendis followed by 85 from Angelo Matthews took Sri Lanka to a total of 232.

Although, Lasith Malinga and Dhanajaya De Silva starred with the ball and compensated for the low score.

England, in their reply, could only manage 212 and fell short by 20 runs. Apart from Ben Stokes’s unbeaten 82 and Joe Root’s 57, rest all departed with cheap figures.

Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Kanuratne said that Joe Root’s wicket was key.

“I think Root’s wicket was the turning point. I was not confident (about going with the review) but still went for it,” Karunaratne said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“It was a close one. Sometimes we were under pressure and sometimes we were dominating. At the end of the day it was good team work from us,” he added.

“When Malinga got a couple wickets we had to keep him for the last overs and then I gave Dhananjaya the ball and he did a good job.

“Those are the things we want as a team and I am expecting those things as a captain.”

England will try to bounce back from this with a match against Australia on Tuesday while Sri Lanka will battle South Africa.
