India took another step towards qualifying for the World Cup semis as Virat Kohli led team beat West Indies by 125 runs at Old Trafford.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli had won the toss and has elected to bat first against West Indies in their World Cup match in Manchester.
India could only manage 268 because of a middle-order collapse. Virat Kohli’s 72 and decent contributions from MS Dhoni, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya helped cross 260 runs mark.
However, Indian Bowlers dismantled West Indian batsmen and counterbalanced the run deficit. Mohammed Shami took 4 wickets, including Chris Gayle and Shai Hopes wickets.
However, it was Virat Kohli who was adjudged Man of the Match. The 30-year-old talisman also became the fastest to reach 20K International runs. The talisman once again led with the bat and scored his fourth successive 50 in the tournament.
India still remains the only unbeaten in the tournament, and have been remarkable so far.
“To be honest we’ve been playing like this for a while now. Things haven’t gone our way with the bat in the last two games, but we’ve still found a way to win which is a very pleasing thing, and I’m happy that I’ve been able to contribute as well.
“Getting to 270 was crucial as we didn’t calculate well in the last match. I thought MS and Hardik played really well.”
“I thought the bowlers did a fantastic job on this surface, and I couldn’t really ask them for any more. The guys gave a really good effort in the field, but we just let ourselves down with the bat.
“We can’t say that there was just one moment that we didn’t seize, but our batters just couldn’t put together the chase. We didn’t support the bowlers well enough in the field and our batting has ultimately been too inconsistent.”
The defeat spells an end to West Indies’ hopes of making the last four while India’s 11 points will almost certainly be enough to reach the knockout stages and they have a further three games to guarantee their spot.
