A Delhi court on Thursday dismissed the plea of three of the Nirbhaya gang-rape 2012 convicts seeking a stay in the execution that is scheduled for tomorrow.
Additional Session Judge Dharmender Rana heard all sides over the matter before reserving the order. The four death row convicts will be hanged tomorrow as per the schedule.
The three convicts—Akshay Kumar, Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Sharma—claimed in the Court that their mercy plea is still pending.
The court was informed by the public prosecutor that the second mercy pleas of Akshay and Pawan, were already rejected on the ground that the first such plea was entertained and considered on merit.
All the four convicts have used their legal remedies. Earlier today, Supreme Court had dismissed a petition filed by Mukesh Singh, one of the convicts in the matter. Pawan Gupta file a petition challenging a Delhi High Court’s order rejecting his claim that he was not in the national capital when the crime was committed.
The four convicts—Akshay Kumar, Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh—are scheduled to be hanged at 5.30 am on March 20. The case pertains to the brutal gang-rape and killing of a 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus on the night of December 16, 2012, by six people including a juvenile in the national capital. The woman had died at a
Singapore hospital a few days later.
